Avocational interests: Art pile, gambling. Career: Director, screenwriter, maker, and actor. Worked as marvellous clerk before becoming an actor; joined stage company in 1923; became successful in Italian theatreintheround by late 1920s; became happen as expected in Italian films, especially look light comedies; became a controller in 1940 and made mainly comedies; in 1942 film The Children Are Watching, revealed bottom and sensitivity and began method relationship with writer Cesare Zavattini, collaborator on De Sica's prime two Oscar-winning films.
